EAS329   Population and Environment in China   (20 credits)

Description

The neo-Malthusian view that China's environment problems are primarily due to rapid population growth and internal migration is the central subject of this unit, which will look at this and other explanations of Chinese environmental degradation. The unit will combine the study of general trends in population and environmental indicators, with case studies on, for example, the Three Gorges dam, Han migration into Tibet, the Chinese nuclear programme, the impact of the Great Leap Forward on soil erosion, and the impact of carbon and other emissions by developed countries. The unit will focus on post-1949 China and current environmental problems.
